Now the only drawback to backcountry snowboarding has been eliminated. Long traverses are pure misery on snowshoes and to add to all that suffering the backcountry boarder has to carry the beloved descent vehicle. The Voile split decision is the answer to every serious backcountry snowboarder. Assembled and disassembled in the same time a skier can prepare for the uptrack or descent and you still get to rip past them. But now you can rip past the skiers on the uptrack as well. A simple binding mount is slid from its freeheel uphill mode and into the completely adjustable downhill stance. Latches complete the set-up to create a perfectly laterally rigid powder board. We just love the concept of the split kit where you have to saw your snowboard vertically in half to build your own custom split decision board.
Obviously if the backcountry boarding that you do is mostly straight up and straight down then you have no need for a split decision but for a pair of bombproof snowshoes that will get you your first tracks. Critical features include compact, lightweight, easy on/off in cold and snowy conditions. Check out the DaKine and MSR for excellent value for money.
Either way: split decision or snowshoes make sure that your no hassle 3 stage flicklock poles are in your backpack. Speaking of which backcountry snowboarding is simply no fun without a backpack that works perfectly for carrying a board. Walking a steep ridgeline with a snowboard flying way above your backpack pushing you from side to side with every gust is never going to get better. That is why you only see 15 year old snowboarders without a DaKine backpack on their backs.
