Ski poles are often the ignored part of our equipment but just like a good pair of skis a good pair of poles can make our skiing experience more enjoyable. The two most important functions of a ski pole for a ski tourer are how do they help me get up the hill and how do they help me get down the hill!
The simplest pole is the standard alpine pole they are sturdy with no moving parts and they are cheap. Think about how miserable your skiing experience would be without poles. On the descent your poles have the job of assistant time keeper combined with your legs and knees. The light carbon fiber poles by LifeLink and Black Diamond assist you getting your hands down the fall line in preparation for the next turn. Skiing is actually substantially easier especially in those desperate moments when you pull a turn out of nowhere because you were able to get those hands punched down the hill. Now as you exit the bottom of the slope breathless from an amazingly fast descent you smile instead of curse.
This is where the uphill grind begins. Focus on shifting your point of balance from ski to ski to maximize skin grip. Most of the climbing is done by your legs and poles are just there for when you do something wrong.
Collapsible 2 and 3 stage poles are great if like snowboarders you need to pack your poles up small or if you are doing a big traverse on a sidehill. No more frustration and cold fingers with twistlock cam designs we carry the Flicklock design which is micro and macro adjustable from the exterior of the pole. Easy collapsing and stays erect all the way up.
